Eliminating Racial Disparities

Over the past decade, the body of evidence documenting health disparities between the minority populations and Caucasian Americans has been growing. The health of the nation has improved significantly, yet African Americans experience greater incidence, prevalence, mortality and burden of disease. Many studies show that, even among insured individuals with the same health coverage, racial and ethnic disparities exist, with African Americans and Hispanics faring worse than whites.Disparities in the burden of death and illness experienced by people of color, as compared to the US population as a whole, have existed since the government began tracking such statistics, and despite numerous interventions these disparities persist, and in some areas continue to grow.

National efforts to reduce or eliminate health disparities is a major goal of Healthy People 2020, the nation’s prevention agenda.Yet, these efforts to reduce or eliminate health disparities among people of color have yet to demonstrate significant success.

SGA has worked with dozens of organizations addressing health disparities (see below). We have worked in almost every community in the City of Chicago and in many others around the country.SGA believes that empowering community based organizations to conduct their own community needs assessment is an effective method to obtain the mosteffective information on which to build intervention strategies.

SGA can:
